I am a family member, a future mother and contributors to society.

I’m not Malala Yousafzai, and I’ve never been to the United Nations Assembly meeting, BUT--we all know of the sincere interest these individuals have in making the world a better place.

I remember in the beginning of the year watching a video regarding the United Nations Assembly meeting in 2015. Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp2lfmb6rlY

This video talked about what happened in 2015 when the Assembly met. They UN met and made some pretty lofty goals. They had 17 goals identified that they hope to achieve in 15 years. This 15 year plan of action is called the “UN Sustainable Development Plan” and it covers everything from no poverty, to stopping the spread of disease, gender rights and equality and education for all.

You can imagine the vast plans and strategies that have to be implemented to make this happen.

During the vide, and after the presentation of the goals, the narrators asks a good questions. “But how are nations to accomplish these lofty goals?”

Believe it or not, the solution lies in the family. “...would be difficult to attain unless the strategies to achieve them focus on the family, which can contribute positively to...eradicating povetty and hunger, achieving universal primary education, pomoting gender and equality and empowering women..”

I feel like after having taken this class, I wholeheartedly believe why this statement by the UN is true.

Family is the unit of society. It’s what determines and molds the creations of citizens and future contributors to society. From the family culture that is established in a home, to the style of child rearing that parents take, all of those things contribute to the making of society.

I feel like as a future parent, this class has opened my eyes to the newfound importance and duty that mothers and father have in raising good children. If I want to contribute to making the world a better place, I need to raise children who would potentially make that change and be an asset to the world.

I remember my mom telling me the story of a long-lost cousin of mine. His mother, my aunt, was so upset at his son, my cousin, for the choices he was making in high school. He was partying, being reckless and risking the safety of others’ lives. My mom told me that my aunt told his son, “I don’t care what you do with your life, but don’t be a nuisance to society.”

I remember thinking that was the strangest thing to be told. Now, after taking this class, I realize the extent that we, as individuals, play in society. We are the elements that compose it.

The family is what determines so many things. This aunt had her son, left his father and began living with another man. My cousin, her son, had so many issues with this arrangement which is what drove his reckless behavior. It was the family inconsistency that contributed to his actions.

It’s amazing to see why God’s plan on having children, raising them in a Gospel-centered home is essential to raising a righteous generation.

I’m grateful for what I know and for the courage I have to raise my children with confidence. Being a parent is a duty to society and a divine calling from God. I feel it a privilege to do my part to make the world a better place as I further discover the blessed title of mother.
